ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the effects of China’s capitalist transition on the country’s media system since the end of the Cultural Revolution. It discusses the content of the People’s Republic of China’s (PRC) news media and describes four broad trends that are shaping the media’s development. It then looks at the tensions China’s move to a more capitalistic system unleashed, specifically the conflicting demands of the market and the party to determine news media content. Finally, it describes some of the new professional practices and institutions that have arisen in response to these tensions and discusses the role they are playing in China’s media evolution.
