ABSTRACT
The conventional wisdom in political science holds that a capitalist market economy is a necessary, though not sufficient, condition for democratic politics. Despite numerous cases of nondemocratic capitalist societies, history shows that capitalism is the sole economic system compatible with a democratic system of government. With the exception of formerly communist Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union, democratic transitions have taken place and been completed in a free-market capitalist context.
