ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses vocational education which is being introduced into schools in an effort to tackle the shortage of skills within the English workforce. These new provisions will present teachers and schools with exciting new opportunities. A key aspect of vocational courses is the work-related element, which attempts to introduce the knowledge, understanding and skills required for specific areas of employment; in Design and Technology these relate to the food industry, manufacturing, engineering and hospitality and catering. As a Design and Technology teacher it is likely that you have specific subject knowledge and understanding which are relevant to the implementation of vocational diplomas in schools.
