ABSTRACT

In September 2005, I was invited by the Community Arts Partnership (CAP) at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) to write the annual play for the Plaza de la Raza Youth Theatre Program. Plaza is a multidisciplinary arts center located in East Los Angeles and as a CAP `partner' is a site for workshops for teens in art, theatre, dance, music, writing, and ®lm taught by CalArts' students and faculty. The theatre program at Plaza was entering its sixteenth season when I was asked to participate; UPSET! was written in conjunction with the Latino youth (ages 13±17) who enrolled in the Plaza program and met three times a week (even more as we neared show time) for 22 weeks before performing at Plaza and a downtown

the making of theatre.
