ABSTRACT

This project was organized according to activities, and for the most part I will keep to that organization as I describe the outcomes of the work. Before proceeding with general description and analysis, however, I would like to introduce two young people in rather more detail than is possible with all sixteen of the core participants in this study. Janice and Jack were both in the first term of Grade 8 when the project began. They took part in every stage of the study and worked with me until the last month of Grade 9. A detailed look at their interactions with texts of various kinds – both as they performed and as they reported such interactions – provides a sense of the rich interpretive texture of their lives, in a way that cannot be conveyed by descriptions of particular activities.
