ABSTRACT

Jack had just turned 13 when he undertook his media diary in his first term of Grade 8. He worked with me until near the end of Grade 9, when he was 141⁄2.

Jack lives with his mother and his sister, who is three years younger. Every other weekend he and his sister travel three hours each way to stay with their father, stepmother and two small half-siblings. I never asked about his personal life and he volunteered no opinions about this arrangement, but it occasionally surfaced in relation to texts: he has two sets of text-related behaviours, two sources of books and videos. For example, he said, ‘We usually rent a video or two when we go to my dad’s or one, maybe once a month with Mom.’
