ABSTRACT
Many of the issues raised in the book have international impact, and Australia has been affected along with other comparable nations. Our answers and responses will be familiar to people in other parts of the world. Our scientists are under increasing pressure to perform research with commercially signifi cant outcomes; our media is being concentrated into a smaller pool of owners; our science journalists are expected to do more with less; and Australian media outlets are being consolidated into fewer hands and offering fewer real choices.
