With admirable brevity and clarity, the poet Wallace Stevens (1879-1955)

memorably evoked “Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird.” No two were

alike, but several overlapped and were mutually enriched by others. In some

of the thirteen, the blackbird’s presence seemed incidental or surprising.
