ABSTRACT

Our initial experiences of applying to adopt in the UK were distinctly discouraging. The local authority and several adoption agencies painted a dismal picture of a dire shortage of babies and the overwhelming challenges of children with special needs. No doubt social workers saw us as preoccupied with our unexplained infertility and not ready to adopt. Perhaps a different approach to us as potential adopters could have enabled at least one child to find a family at an earlier stage.
