ABSTRACT

I have heard that, before they can get their taxi cab licence, London taxi drivers have to acquire and demonstrate ‘the knowledge’. This is an in-depth knowledge of the streets of London, the best routes to get to destinations, and current road situations. This factual knowledge is acquired not only by studying maps, but also by driving around London, developing mind-maps and bodily-kinaesthetic awareness of locations. Being a good taxi driver also involves dealing with people, anticipating their needs, and getting them to where they want to be.
