ABSTRACT

To empathise with the offender the community must become acquainted with his world. They must educate themselves about the condition that is sexual abuse and also the therapeutic experience he has been through. They must understand that for sex offenders there is no cure: ‘there is only the hope of better self-control and behaviour management’ (Blanchard, 1995: 49). The offender has to live with this fact every day. To realise that others appreciate his situation can increase his sense of being accepted.
