ABSTRACT

Participants at the workshop The Impact of El Niño and La Niña on Southeast Asia, held in Hanoi in February 2000, warned that

El Niño and La Niña events are the most important cause of climate extremes lasting from a season to a year or more in the tropics and subtropics. Responding effectively to the challenge posed by these events is essential if sustainable development is to be secured.
