ABSTRACT

As Canada shifts from a resource-based to a knowledge-based economy, the expectations and pressures placed on formal education systems to deliver relevant, current, and industry-related education and training increase. Governments see a clear link between a strong, prosperous economy and educational systems outputs, and in doing so they must deal with several key policy areas: four in our opinion. Institutions also face several key policy areas: we see five. In this chapter we discuss both groups of policy areas in the context of today’s societal and educational shifts. We believe that if the policy areas are not adequately addressed, any effective use of information and communications technologies (ICTs) may be compromised.
