ABSTRACT

Brigitte Yan López [space here for a shortvid of YanL at the Beaumont Hall presenting the book] has come out with a new virtualOpus. This work completes her famous series about the art (?) of becoming an agent in the Firmnet. In the earlier numbers she was under strong fire, much of the criticism concerning her ability to give any advice at all in such a secretly kept subject. Some of the most

radical analysts claim Firmnet (the circle of initiates) does not exist as an actual society but that it is a grandiose hoax with its roots in the 1980s and 1990s SF tradition of Cyberpunk. This would not be the first time a writer’s invention achieves spectacular levels of believers (think of Donnelly’s Atlantis) and in our society of the sellable the Firmnet is probably not the only true-claiming meme with fictional origins. Anyway, YanL has attended to these ideas and in this fourth chapter the delicate matter of who is who in Firmnet and how to fish for contacts in that evasive world has been totally ignored. Not satisfied with this measure she has gone even further, writing in the introduction to this new vOpus that the aim of Firmnet, a Map (YanL, 2014) was not to represent the exact actual situation of that circle but simply to draw a sketch where the important bits are ‘the relating lines, not the details’ (she seems to have failed to see that, according to the trends, there are only details).
