ABSTRACT

This chapter explores Japanese attitudes to creating and producing something. These attitudes may well have influenced accepted social thought on work and production in Japan, and it is proposed that research on this subject could help to clarify changing attitudes to work among Japanese young people. I should like here to revise ideas both of work and play in a Japanese context, and for this purpose, I will examine these concepts with a particular focus on Japanese manga and anime creation, represented by the work of the famous mangaka1 Miyazaki Hayao. Through research carried out into his way of creating, it soon became clear to me that his creation is a mixture of fun and hard work.
