ABSTRACT
Among the most striking products of classical Athens are its public buildings; but although the Parthenon is an impressive structure, it is not easy to determine its effect on the Athenian economy: some means of measuring public building against other economic activity is required. Greek architectural conservatism gives considerable assistance: most temples have a broadly very similar design; that enables us to reconstruct them from relatively few fragments.
