ABSTRACT

The political and economic changes that have taken place in Africa over the past century have been so remarkable that no one paper, book, or article, or this chapter can fully describe or document how the continent’s relationship with the United States and especially with Europe has shifted from an oppressive colonial and slavery period to a more balanced collaboration (Antwi-Boasiako, 2010). The otherwise hostile nature of the involvement between African natives and their European occupiers has given way to co-existence. The brutalities and inhuman treatment by both sides in the past have morphed into a partnership of political and economic development. The question is whether Africa is now prepared to move into a more formal alignment with the transatlantic community.
