ABSTRACT

Cancer is a group of diseases defined by disruption of the usual process of cellular turnover due to changes in the genetic information of cells. A cancerous tumour will also invade the normal tissue surrounding it, and malignant cells can spread to others sites in the body through the bloodstream or lymphatic system, a process known as metastasis. Major organs such as the lung, brain, and liver, are common sites for metastasised cells. The most common treatments for cancer are surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and hormonal therapy. A systematic review of eighteen randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of yoga interventions for women with breast cancer reported small benefits from the majority of studies for symptoms of depression, anxiety, or stress, and quality of life outcomes. Meta-analysis of data suggested that when compared with non-exercising control groups, small improvements from exercise interventions existed for a range of clinical outcomes.
