ABSTRACT

As befits a relatively young field, historical studies of the development of management are a fairly recent phenomenon.1 Over the past decade or so, studies have been completed of the management traditions of the US, the UK, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Scandinavia and Japan (e.g. Locke 1989; Engwall 1992; Alvarez 1998). From this work it is clear to see that the field developed distinctively in different countries and continents, with the US tradition having had a significant, some would argue hegemonic, influence (e.g. Alvesson and Willmott 1996; Locke 1996).
