ABSTRACT

This chapter, inspired by the title of the Lancaster Literacy Research Group’s theme year ‘Expanding the New Literacy Studies’, explores one direction in which the theory of New Literacy Studies might fruitfully be expanded. The word ‘exploration’ underlines the fact that I am in no way attempting to develop a coherent theory of ‘literacy and time’. Rather, in this chapter I work through some of the implications of considering time as an important element of literacy practices, exploring some of the ways in which this focus could develop the theory of literacy practices further.
