ABSTRACT
This chapter reviews recent progress in understanding and ameliorating the impact of psychological illness on disability. This is a fitting topic for a book in honour of Sir David Goldberg. The hallmarks of his work have been devotion to the scientific method, commitment to advancement of the public’s health, and conviction that improved recognition and management of mental disorders in the primary care setting will improve the well-being of the population-at-large.
