ABSTRACT
The purpose of this chapter is to examine how learning can be affected when one’s
personal values are undermined, threatened or berated. A consideration of the
process of transfer of learning is central to the discussion. The general issue to be
explored is how students with a coherent set of beliefs and values derived from
their membership of a ‘faith community’ cope with a social work course when the
values they hold dear are publicly rejected by staff and peers.
