ABSTRACT

Transfer of learning has been described as ‘the ultimate aim of teaching’. However,

achieving this goal is regarded as ‘one of teaching’s most formidable problems’

(McKeough et al. 1995: vii). Transfer of learning has been of interest to academics

working in a number of different fields – psychology, philosophy, schooling, adult

education and vocational/ professional education. In terms of social work education

in the UK, it is one of the central tenets of the professional qualification – the

Diploma in Social Work – binding the elements of a disparate curriculum with a

diverse range of objectives.
