ABSTRACT
In today’s syllabuses, the study of literature tends to be optional rather than compulsory. In this chapter I shall argue the case for the inclusion of some literary study in the A/AS level course and for the integration of that literary study with language work. I shall begin by showing why literature tends to be optional and end by outlining in general the approach taken by the Examination Boards.
