The relevance of A/AS level courses to post-16 learners

GCE Advanced (A) levels have represented the ‘gold standard’ for the British education system since their introduction in the early 1950s. Specialisation through the selection of three and occasionally four subject areas has led to many discussions over what they actually prepare learners for. Access to A levels has tended to be restricted to the more academically able learners.
