ABSTRACT

Globalization is the buzz word of the 1990s. The exponential rise of multinational corporations in recent years, the extent, movement and accessibility of international finance capital and the consequent interdependence of countries, raised questions about the sovereignty, autonomy and future of the nation state. Sam Aaronovitch devoted a great deal of his working life in helping us to understand these type of developments at both the national and local spheres. His work represents an attempt to probe the forces making for structural changes in advanced capitalist economies, but especially in the UK.2 This essay attempts to extend a particularly important aspect of it.
