ABSTRACT

A central argument in Just and Unjust Wars is Michael Walzer’s reconstruction of the doctrine of double effect (DDE) and its implications for the risks that just warriors must take to minimize harm to civilians. In 2009, Walzer and co-author Avishai Margalit revisited the topic in an exchange with Asa Kasher and Amos Yadlin. 1 In this chapter I shall defend a version of Walzer’s conclusion on grounds somewhat different than his own.
