ABSTRACT
This relatively new discipline extends some of the techniques of bibliography, which were discussed in Chapter 4, into a very large and challenging subject indeed. This is the historical study of the book in its economic, social and cultural contexts. In many ways this subject is so all-inclusive that it can, when practised well, absorb many aspects of bibliography and turn them to the service of what is, essentially, a new and distinct discipline.
