ABSTRACT

Access to secondary education is rapidly expanding in rural Southern Africa, hence this chapter sets out to explore the role it plays in the sustainable development of rural communities. This is not a simple matter of assessing whether secondary schools teach skills which can be put into effect in raising the agricultural productivity of the land, while conserving its utility for future generations. Although such a role is doubtless relevant, and will be discussed in the course of the chapter, there are two roles played by the school which are of arguably greater significance.
