ABSTRACT

Adolescents who exhibit sexually abusive behaviour constitute a group who both can and should be provided with services, particularly as their stage of development makes them more likely to be amenable to change than adults, who are also likely to have been offending for longer periods of time. Other factors, specific to young people, which will be outlined in this chapter also make it imperative that intervention in a given geographical area is provided in a consistent way. Recognition of this means that provision for appropriate services should be included in local policies and procedures. It will be argued that opportunities can be created for assessment and intervention work with young people, ideally whilst maintained within their community or in the local area, and that such programmes need not be resource-intensive but do require commitment from agencies and workers.
