ABSTRACT

Now that you have learned at least the basics of how to write for television, it is time to formulate a plan for how you are going to get your career going. The most important gift you can give yourself right now is to be realistic. If your plan is to go to L.A. and get a job as a TV writer, that is not a realistic goal. It’s a fine long-term goal, but you need a short-term goal as well. I cannot tell you how many writers I have this same conversation with, and they don’t take my words to heart because I am telling them something they don’t want to hear. They may secretly think that they will be the exception. These same people call me a month later, panicked because they realize how hard it is to get even an entry-level job, let alone get an agent and/or sell a script.
