ABSTRACT

As we have already seen, time and memory have become immensely important in contemporary fiction. In the very philosophic writing of Jorge Luis Borges, as we saw in chapter 2, time becomes a series of labyrinthine intellectual games. In Ian McEwan’s and Maxine Hong Kingston’s work, it ripples through culture and history, with memory and amnesia becoming crucial concerns. The focus of this chapter is on time and the body. Looking at some of Jeanette Winterson’s texts, it explores how questions of time lead inevitably to questions of flesh.
