ABSTRACT
Long-term marriage constitutes a highly important social, emotional, financial and practical relationship. Despite the significance of the relationship, long-term marriage remains an under-researched area, particularly in Britain. Janet Askham (1995) has suggested that the comprehensive study of marriage from the perspective of older people has been neglected, in part, as a result of it being concerned with older people, who are seen as marginal to society's mainstream projects.
