ABSTRACT
I think it is time again to ask the big question: ‘What actually is television?’ We are reaching the point where new models of television as a process seem to be required. So here, in a contingent form, is a model that I happen to be working on, a model that has particular relevance for the definition of documentary, and for the relationship of television to knowledge in general.
