Wittgenstein, Kant, and the “metaphysics of experience”

For Kant, the categories of the Understanding embody transcendental constraints on the form of all possible thought. Many have thought that for Wittgenstein the facts of “grammar” play a similar role. I shall argue that this is not so. There are superficial similarities between Kant and Wittgenstein, but they mask deep differences.
