ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that the construction of the individual is linked to the cultural categorisation of social relations. Focusing on fisher-gatherer-hunter communities in the south-east Baltic and Scandinavia, it is argued that social relations within groups can differ despite sharing the same mode of production. In this I diverge from others who see the social construction of the individual as being more closely related to the mode of production (Zvelebil and Rowley-Conwy 1984; Hodder 1990).
