ABSTRACT

When I took part in a Scottish pilot project to introduce French to primary children in 1990 I had a distinct sense of déjà vu. As a raw recruit to the primary classroom in the mid-1960s I trained to participate in the Modern Languages in the Primary School (MLPS) experiment of that era only to see it abandoned following the publication of a damning report from the Scottish Education Department. The following quotation sums up the views of the inspectorate on the ill-fated project.
