ABSTRACT

In March 19901 was appointed as the ‘Primary French Co-ordinator’ following the decision of Kent County Council to fund a pilot project to introduce French into a small number of primary schools. From the twenty-one pilot schools grouped around Folkestone, Sandwich and Dover it has now spread to over 400 schools throughout the county. The Kent experience is important because it has involved a large number of schools, teachers and pupils and has been sustained over eight years. It is delivered by class teachers whose linguistic skills are limited but who are skilled in teaching all other aspects of the curriculum. They attend the county’s in-service training programme which is designed to provide the teachers with easy but effective strategies to introduce modern languages into their classrooms.
