ABSTRACT

The four artists you will encounter in this section are rare and defiant. All have created new and challenging work, and by their contributions to African-American dramatic literature and performance practices have altered the contours of the creations of all future artists. Part of a tradition of African-American women writers and performers, they have defiantly broken with that tradition by daring to break new ground doing and speaking the unspeakable. They attack their subjects with fierce passion and midnight magic, creating words and images that reveal bitter truths we would rather not know, all the while breathing life into dying souls.
