ABSTRACT

The darkroom is that magic space where images can come to life for the first time. Darkrooms can also be scary, insecure environments, full of anxiety. Black artists who choose to investigate issues relating to identity through photography place themselves in highly vulnerable positions. The door is basically wide open for ‘getting it wrong’. It is difficult to remember, when dealing with issues relating to race and representation, that there is not one correct discourse, that there is no correct formula for investigating personal experience. This is what makes the work of many Black practitioners so intriguing.
