ABSTRACT

In this paper the development of the labour market approach to the study of the relationship between education and (un)employment in the United Kingdom is examined. The first part examines the theoretical origins of the labour market approach, the types of issues it has addressed and highlights some of the differences in emphasis between the various research groups which have pioneered this approach in the UK. The second part concludes with a discussion of the achievements of the labour market approach and some of the new research questions it has raised.
