ABSTRACT

This book has been concerned with making sense of literacy within one community. In one way this study is complete in itself: it celebrates the uniqueness of individual relationships to literacy, documented in a specific time and place. A specific description is of value in its own right, and we hope that our readers have been drawn into the lives of people such as Shirley and Cliff, just as we have been, and have been left with a richer view of the kaleidoscope of literacies in everyday life.
