ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the prevailing identification with all things military in a strategic area of South Sudan. It argues that the United Nations (UN) and other international agencies effectively reinforced the position of militaristic elements within the government of South Sudan and subverted initiatives to improve conditions for the civilian population. The UN Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) was mandated by the UN Security Council to monitor and support the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA). The immediate post-war period was characterized by efforts to strengthen South Sudanese defences. European culture was brought to the people of British Central Africa through its forces as much as its religious missions. Social drama is a concept devised by the social theorist Victor Turner to study the dialectic of social transformation and continuity. The main form of transport is Chinese-made bicycle or by foot.
