ABSTRACT
The dramatic intensification of insecurity in recent decades is incomprehensible without reference to the activities and policies of states. As other chapters in this volume amply illustrate, political choices have been paramount in unleashing insecurity in the labour market, housing, environment, welfare provision and the family.
