ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), offer rationale for how DBT may be used to augment standard Family-based treatment (FBT) when treatment response is insufficient, particularly when affect dysregulation is part of the clinical picture, and present a model for how an integrated FBT-DBT approach is used in the clinical practice. DBT is a comprehensive outpatient treatment that was originally designed to target recurrent suicidal and self-injurious behaviors in adult women suffering from borderline personality disorder (BPD). In response to the need for alternative or adjunctive clinical interventions for adolescents with complex Eating Disorders presentations, the Cleveland Center for Eating Disorders (CCED) is exploring the effectiveness and feasibility of an integrated FBT-DBT model.
