ABSTRACT
A starting-point for understanding the Presocratics is the rough-and-ready remarkthat, in their theories, there are some bits that ‘look like science’ and some bits that ‘look like philosophy’.1 Here I concentrate on the ‘science’, and try to build up an overall picture of this theorizing, and the ways in which it was like and unlike science as now understood.
