ABSTRACT

It may be that journalists on consumer or trade magazines are not faced with the same doubts about their behaviour as those who work in hard news. It is noticeable that most of the more extreme examples of questionable practice from journalists do seem to revolve around news. Nevertheless, some magazine journalists write news and all magazine journalists should be aware of what some of the ethical issues are. News brings its own pressures to do with deadlines, speed of work, competition between both reporters and publications and, it has to be said, the machismo style of many newsrooms. Any journalists who are prepared to think in terms of morals may find their work threatens to compromise their beliefs more or less often. This is why it’s important for beginner journalists to reflect on the implications of what they’ve chosen to do.
