ABSTRACT

Defamatory words published in any medium will give rise to libel, not slander (which concerns transitory, usually spoken, words). However, a journalist needs to take care how he phrases his questions, and to whom he addresses them, when investigating a person’s alleged misconduct. The subject of his inquiry could otherwise sue for slander.
