ABSTRACT

It is the aim of this chapter to use the film The Great Rock ’n’ Roll Swindle to elucidate several key issues surrounding the nature of punk. The problem of what is meant by punk will be discussed in this opening section. The issues that will be dealt with are largely dictated by the film itself, and they will include the nature of authenticity in relation to punk rock, and the role of visual style in the construction of meaning within the subculture.
