ABSTRACT

This chapter is concerned with the experience of the art therapist in offering groups to drug and alcohol patients. The theory of pathological narcissism is outlined as a frame of reference and the concepts of the ideal object and entitlement are explored in relation to this. It is proposed that art therapy is particularly suited to addressing narcissistic issues within the individual. Emphasis is placed on the visual expressions of unacknowledged entitlement which appear despite otherwise apparent positive motivation. I begin the piece with a theoretical discussion followed by a case study which explores how these issues manifest in the art therapy setting.
